Card Dicussion: Blue-Eyes White Dragon

This legendary dragon is a powerful engine of destruction. Virtually invincible, very few have faced this awesome creature and lived to tell the tale.
The Blue-Eyes White Dragon is one of the most iconic cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!. This almighty dragon is the centerpiece in Seto Kaiba's deck. It was once feared for its powerful 3000 ATK. The majority of monsters were not strong enough on their own to destroy a Blue-Eyes White Dragon during the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Konami made plenty of support for the Blue-Eyes White Dragon upon its release. A lot of the early cards were dragon support. Dragon decks were given the most basic needs during the early days. They had a field card, field protection, and easy special summoning combos before every other type of monster. In addition, Lord of D. and Flute of Summoning Dragon were one of the first powerful combos. Lord of D. protects all dragons on the field and his Flute of Summoning Dragon special summons two dragons from the hand to the field. Normal monsters like the Blue-Eyes White Dragon need the additional support because they don't have special effects to assist them.

In addition, Konami created some support for the Blue-Eyes archetype. The Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon was the first support card. It is still one of the strongest monsters in the game with 4,500 ATK. Also, the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon is another powerful card. However, these monsters are not very practical in today's decks. They are very difficult to summon to the field and can easily be destroyed.

Furthermore, the Blue-Eyes White Dragon returned in 2013 with a force in Saga of Blue-Eyes White Dragon Structure Deck. The Blue-Eyes White Dragon became a more playable card than it was for the past few years. To illustrate, Maiden with Eyes of Blue has boosted Blue-Eyes White Dragon decks. She can quickly special summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the deck during either players' turn. Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon is also another good card for Blue-Eyes White Dragon decks. It can provide temporary protection and most importantly Azure-Eyes Silver Dragon can special summon a Blue-Eyes White Dragon from the graveyard once per turn.

In closing, Blue-Eyes White Dragon will always be one of the most popular cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!. Blue-Eyes White Dragon came out of the gates very strong. It regained some of its relevance in 2013. Blue-Eyes White Dragon decks can be very powerful with its most recent support. I'm sure even more powerful cards to support the Blue-Eyes White Dragon will continue to be released!

Link Joker's Future

The spell has been broken and Link Joker was defeated! Link Joker is very different from every clan in the game. It served as the main antagonist in season 3. Unlike Aqua Force and the Shadow Paladins, Link Joker is naturally evil. The clan was created by the Void unlike its previous army Aqua Force and the Shadow Paladins were manipulated by the corrupt Phantom Blaster Dragon. Link Joker was finally defeated by Aichi and Liberator, Monarch Sanctuary Alfred.

However, Link Joker doesn't need a lot of support. The deck is strong enough to stay relevant in the competitive scene because of its unique Lock skill. Link Joker received a massive wave of support in 2013. Star-vader, Chaos Breaker Dragon and Star-vader, Nebula Lord Dragon are the deck's long-term bosses. To be honest it's only missing a Quintet Wall. Link Joker's infamous skill Lock gives it an advantage against most clans. Ezel and Alfred are two of a few strong individuals who are strong enough to break the spell.

Clans normally receive support when characters in the anime play those clans. The main characters' clans receive the most support because their decks are featured more than less supported decks. It's a form of advertising that is commonly used by companies. It is unlikely that Link Joker will have a character to represent it anytime soon. Its lack of representation can led to it being absent in future booster sets.

There is hope for Link Joker's players. The Void's return can certainly mean the return of Link Joker. Bushiroad could also release future support in promo packs. Japan's most recent promo packs included support with the ability to unlock units or break the spell. Link Joker's players have at least some hope for new support.

The future doesn't appear to be clear for the Void's avatar Link Joker. The lack of representation in the anime may led to the clan's absence in future booster sets. Link Joker might be on the sidelines for the time being. Only time will tell if units will be locked again or King Alfred truly broke the spell.

Unit of The Week: Brightlance Dragoon

Like a ray of light, a bright spear of lightning pierced through the battlefield.
CONT [V/R]: If you do not have another «Narukami» in the same column as this unit, this unit gets Power -2000.
ACT [V/R]: [Counter Blast (1)] This unit gets Power +1000 until end of turn.
Brightlance Dragoon is one of the worst cards in Cardfight!! Vanguard. The card is so bad that it doesn't deserve a proper introduction from me. Brightlance Dragoon is the second 10K attacker for the Narukami clan. Despite being a 10K attacker, Narukami players do not use this card because of its mediocre skill set.

First of all, his continuous skill is a major weakness. He loses 2,000 power when there is not a rear guard in the same column. It is very ironic that Brightlance Dragoon's weakness can be exploited by his clan. He is a terrible attacker against decks that can retire opposing units. Kagero and Narukami units have the skills to retire units in the back row.

Secondly, Brightlance Dragoon's second skill isn't very useful especially if he loses power for not having a rear guard in the same column. The skill is just a copy of the same useless skill the grade 1 units have from the trial decks. The skill does not create magic numbers to break the limits. A good player will not waste five counterblasts for a mediocre skill. In theory Brightlance Dragoon can become a 23,000 attacker by using his skill five times and receiving a boost from a 8K booster.  However, nobody in their right mind would make such an awful play.

Finally, Narukami decks have much better options for grade 2 units. Eradicator, Spark Rain Dragon, Eradicator, Thunder Boom Dragon, and Thunderstorm Dragoon are superior attackers for Narukami decks. Their attack power doesn't have a requirement.

In conclusion, Brightlance Dragoon is the worst 10K attacker in the game. His skills are a joke. They do not benefit him in anyway possible. The first skill or restriction ruins Brightlance Dragoon's value. A budget player shouldn't consider using this card. It is a shame to see a bad card in Cardfight!! Vanguard. When you see Brightlance Dragoon burn it to ashes.

Race in Card Games

Magic: The Gathering put card games on notice and since then many popular card games have been created. A very important problem has been on my mind for a very long time and I am going to post my thoughts on the matter. Card games are one of the few entertainment industries that doesn't have racial diversity. This is an issue that is rarely mention in the card game community.

The comic book industry went through a similar phrase. However, it was during a very racist period in American history. We have moved pass that time and many children franchises have more racial diversity than in America's past. Justice League, Power Rangers, and X-Men are many of the racially diverse franchises that have been big hits with children.

Cardfight!! Vanguard and Yu-Gi-Oh! are two of the most popular card games today. Yet, both games are lacking in racial diversity. Furthermore, Yu-Gi-Oh! doesn't have any excuses. Yu-Gi-Oh! has been a card game for fifteen years. Konami had more than enough time to add racial diversity in the game. Cardfight!! Vanguard was created in 2011. This isn't the 1950s with only White characters. There should be characters from every race.

However, there are always players who will say that these card games target Japaneses players. That is partly true. However, Bushiroad and Konami target markets across the globe. Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, and Whites play fun card games. Most racial groups have been ignored or overlooked. The companies should consider and give more attention to players from every background. It can only bring in more players and show that they actually care about everyone who plays their games.

Finally, the lack of racial diversity sends the wrong message to the younger players. The negative message says to children that people from their racial groups aren't good enough to be characters in these card games. The majority of players are young children. Kids who are African-American, Hispanic, and White may wonder why there aren't characters from their racial backgrounds and different races in this game. This was a very common question during comic books' early days. It is a question that I asked myself as a child when I watched cartoons that only had one racial group in it. Even though I am African-American, I still asked why was a cartoon dominantly black. Where are the Whites, Asians, Hispanics, etc?

In closing, it is time for card games to create racial diversity. The only way to stop the negative message to children from card games is to diversify the characters in card games. Diversifying the characters will tell children that anyone from any background can be a great and powerful person in these fantasy worlds. Diversity will only make card games more appealing and exciting for players.

Unit of The Week: Star-vader, Infinite Zero Dragon

The origin of limits. Everything starts from zero.
[AUTO] Limit Break 4 (This ability is active if you have four or more damage):When a «Link Joker» rides this unit, choose a rear-guard from your opponent's front row and back row, lock them, and choose your vanguard, and that unit gets [Power]+10000 until end of turn. (The locked card is turned face down, and cannot do anything. It turns face up at the end of the owner's turn.)
[AUTO](VC):When this unit attacks a vanguard, this unit gets
[Power]+2000 until end of that battle. [CONT](VC/RC): Lord (If you have a unit without a same clan as this unit, this unit cannot attack)
The Void has sent its avatar Link Joker to reverse Cray and Earth. Star-vader, Infinite Zero Dragon is ready to launch its first wave of attacks against both worlds. Star-vader, Infinite Zero Dragon is one of the first cards to be introduced with the new Lock skill.

Furthermore, Link Joker is famous for its powerful Lock ability. Star-vader Infinite Zero Dragon's Break Ride skill is very annoying to play against. The Break Ride skill can shut down a column and one of the opposing player's boosters. A skillful veteran player would most likely lock an opponent's vanguard's booster. This is a major offensive and defensive advantage. There will be one less attack during the opponent's next turn, and the opponent lost a potential interceptor.

Most importantly, the skill is completely free. There is not a cost to activate its strong Break Ride skill. If Star-vader, Infinite Zero Dragon's Break Ride had a cost, then it would prevent or limit broken combos. A skill this strong should have a cost because it will greatly limit the opponent's options.

To Illustrate, Star-vader, Infinite Zero Dragon's Break Ride skill is heavily abused by its leader, Star-vader, Chaos Breaker Dragon. Chaos Breaker Dragon's skills can lock additional units and draw cards during the opponent's end phrase. It gives the player major card advantage by discarding useless or unneeded cards such as Grade 3 units to Lock and retire opponent's units, then draw cards to reinforce his or her field. This is one of the most broken combos in all of Cardfight!! Vanguard. Hand advantage is a key to winning. However, Star-vader, Chaos Breaker Dragon gives an unfair hand advantage to the player because he or she can draw at least four cards during the opponent's end phase and destroy the opponent's field.

In closing, Star-vader Infinite Zero Dragon is one of the strongest Break Ride cards because of its many powerful Lock combos with its fellow Star-vaders. Its Lock ability can change the game and hinder an opponent. Unfortunately, there is a very bad apple named Star-vader, Chaos Breaker Dragon who abuses Star-vader, Infinite Zero Dragon's Break Ride.

Bushiroad Should Create Defensive Players For Spike Brothers.

Photographed by Dave Sizer.
Spike Brothers are based off of American football. Their specialty is creating powerful offensive formations. However, Bushiroad has overlooked that sometimes the defensive minded team is superior. We recently witnessed the NFL's number one ranked defense the Seattle Seahawks dominate the NFL's number one ranked offense the Denver Broncos.

Most NFL players are black.
I see what you did Bushiroad.
Furthermore, the vast majority of Spike Brothers are offensive players such as running backs, quarterbacks, and wide receivers. Their big play is during the late game when they superior call fresh players (units) to rear guard for extra attacks. They are built like the Denver Broncos' offense. They can make big plays, but they will fall in defeat to strong defensive teams like the Seahawks.

In addition, some of the most glorified players in football play defense. Deion Sanders, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Richard Sherman, etc. are considered some of the best players who have ever played the game of football. These players are also known to score points after forcing a turnover so defense can punch the opposing offense in the stomach. Spike Brothers are lacking these types of player makers.

To illustrate, defense wins championships! Spike Brothers are lacking many defensive players. Currently, there aren't anything corners, safeties, and linebackers in Spike Brothers. The only defensive players are Juggernaut Maximum and Panzer Gale. This isn't surprising because Bushiroad has focused on the offensive side of the ball. Cardfight!! Vanguard is also more offensive oriented than defense oriented. I would like for them to start drafting defensive players.

Finally, it would be very interesting to have a Spike Brothers deck built on defense. Some football teams' strength is their defense. The Seahawks' defense was the difference maker in the Super Bowl. They defeated the greatest offensive in the history of the NFL. Bushiroad can create exclusive Spike Brothers cards that gain additional guard power in special situations for having a particular vanguard or archetype in the vanguard circle. In addition, defensive players are also team captains. I would love to see a cornerback like Richard Sherman as a grade 3 vanguard and the deck's boss.

In conclusion, Bushiroad needs to realize that football is a two-sided sport with offense and defense. They are dropping the ball on this clan's potential. There are a lot of focus placed on Spike Brothers' offensive skills. However, the game of football is not just about offense. Defense plays a critical role in football. I want Bushiroad to be more creative with the clan's overall theme and develop special defensive units.

Unit of The Week: Juggernaut Maximum

Smash to smithereens, Defensive Tackle!
[CONT](VC/RC):If you do not have another «Spike Brothers» vanguard or rear-guard, this unit gets [Power]-2000.
[AUTO](RC):[Soul Blast (1)] When this unit attacks, you may pay the cost. If you do, this unit gets [Power]+5000 until end of that battle, and at the beginning of the close step of that battle, return this unit to your deck, and shuffle your deck.
Offense sales tickets. Defense wins championships. Juggernaut Maximum is Spike Brothers's starting defensive tackle. He earned his place in the starting lineup by being one of the best rear guards on the Spikes Brothers's football team. He is known for his aggressive play on the field.

Furthermore, Juggernaut Maximum is a very powerful rear guard unit in Demonic Lord, Dudley Emperor's, General Seifried's, and Grateful Catapult's decks. These decks can superior call him either from the deck or during the Twin Drive. His soul blast gives him an additional 5,000 power to give him a total of 16,000 power. In addition, Bad End Dragger's Break Ride skill can give Juggernaut Maximum another 10,000 to make give him a total of 26,000 power.

To illustrate, Juggernaut Maximum doesn't stop until the play ends. If your opponent blocked your vanguard's attack and your Drive Check revealed a trigger(s), then give all effects to Juggernaut Maximum to unleash a full-scale attack. The attack will be very deadly if you're able to give Juggernaut Maximum an extra critical from a critical trigger.

In closing, Juggernaut Maximum deserves Cray's Defensive Player of the Year award. He hustles to be the battlefield when his vanguard leaders superior call him to the battlefield. He gives the opponent a lot of pressure in the mid and late game. His attacks come at full force by reaching very high numbers. His late game heroics will lead the Spike Brothers to victory!

Card Fighter Spotlight: Aichi Sendou Part 2-A Lucky Victory

Aichi has plenty of experience under this belt. He has battled the top card fighters in Japan at the shop tournament and nation tournament. He now has a better understanding of the rules, card effects, and strategies. He will use his newfound skills to lead Team Q4 to a national championship.

For instance, Aichi was playing better than ever! He was creating good strategies that helped him reach the next level. His improved play led Team Q4 to their first national championship. Aichi made the tournament's best play against Team Caesar when he rode Alfred Early to superior call Blaster Blade from the soul. He crushed Kenji's defenses by using Blaster Blade's skill to retire Cosmo Break. This game winning play led Team Q4 to the nation championship match!

However, Aichi still wasn't thinking ahead of his opponents. In episode 63, Aichi called Knight of Friendship Kay way too early in the game. He completely overlooked Ren's next move to ride his avatar Blaster Dark. Blaster Dark retired Knight of Friendship Kay before Kay had a chance to use his skill with Blaster Blade. Aichi wasted an attacker and future booster. Do not call a card similar to Knight of Friendship Kay without first being able to take advantage of its skill(s).

Most importantly, Aichi has fixed his defensive problems. He was drunk on guarding during the first half of season one, and this left him with empty hands during the late game that led him to defeat. He now has enough cards to defend against attacks during the late game. He finally stopped unnecessarily calling and riding Flash Shield Iseult. A card fighter should only ride a perfect guard when it's his or her only option. Offense sales tickets. Defense wins championships.

However, Aichi's deck building skills were still sub-par. I'm not going to look at his Shadow Paladin deck
because Ren built it for Aichi. Let's take a good look at Aichi's Majesty Lord Blaster Deck (the image on the right). This deck is an absolute disgrace to every MLB player on God's green Earth. Ren Suzugamori should be ashamed of himself for losing against one of the worst built decks that looked like it was built by Morikawa. One of the deck's main problems is the lack of Blaster Blades in the deck because Aichi only uses one Blaster Blade per deck. Majesty Lord Blaster decks heavily depend on Blaster Blade and the deck would be weaken without him. His deck would be very inconsistent in real life. Why doesn't Aichi run multiple copies of Blaster Blade? This is really bothersome because Ren always plays the maximum amount of Blaster Dark and Blaster Dark Revenger cards in each deck.

In addition to Aichi's deck's problems, the deck only has one copy of Majesty Lord Blaster. A deck built around a boss unit must have multiple copies of the boss to reach its fullest potential. Wingal Brave is the best starter and can search for Majesty Lord Blaster. Yet, it is too risky to run one copy because it could
land into the Damage Zone. Wingal Brave would be more useful if there are multiple copies of Majesty Lord Blaster. Now the deck's winning image has vanished. Aichi's deck should run four copies of Majesty Lord Blaster. Instead of running four copies of Majesty Lord Blaster, Aichi ran four copies of Solitary Knight, Gancelot, two copies of Alfred Early, and one Soul Saver Dragon. This is very mind-boggling because Ren and Kai run the maximum amount of copies of Dragonic Overlord the End and Phantom Blaster Overlord.

Furthermore, this deck should not have any copies of Solitary Knight, Gancelot. He is not a useful card for this type of deck. Aichi did not consider a situation where Gancelot would be his only option to ride as the grade 3 vanguard. He should have considered this possibility because he has a much higher probability to draw Solitary Knight, Gancelot than Majesty Lord Blaster. Not to mention, using Gancelot's skill twice would still be far weaker than Majesty Lord Blaster's skills. Gancelot is a very weak 9k vanguard and would be dominated by Phantom Blaster Overlord. This is a prime example of Aichi badly needing to work on building better and more consistent decks.

In conclusion, Aichi has shown improvement in his play. He has cleaned up many of his past mistakes such as over guarding and unnecessarily riding perfect guards. However, his deck building skills need major work. It is very illogical to run only one copy of Blaster Blade and Majesty Lord Blaster in a Majesty Lord Blaster deck. It was a miracle that Aichi was able to defeat the great Ren Suzugamori with a terribly built deck. At least Aichi is moving into the right direction by improving his offensive and defensive techniques. Be sure to tune in for part three when I discuss Aichi's poor decision to dump Great Silver Wolf, Garmore for Incandescent Lion, Blond Ezel.

Unit of The Week: Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom

Now is the time to show them our resolution! Revengers, follow me!
[AUTO] Limit Break 4 (This ability is active if you have four or more damage):[Counter Blast (1)] When a «Shadow Paladin» rides this unit, you may pay the cost. If you do, choose your vanguard, and until end of turn, that unit gets [Power]+10000 and search your deck for up to one grade 2 or less «Shadow Paladin», call it to (RC), shuffle your deck, and that unit gets [Power]+5000 until end of turn.
[AUTO](VC):When this unit attacks a vanguard, this unit gets [Power]+2000 until end of that battle.
[CONT](VC/RC): Lord (If you have a unit without a same clan as this unit, this unit cannot attack)
I'm so excited! I pre-ordered Trial Deck 10: Purgatory Revenger last night and Blaster Dark Revenger along with Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom will lend me their strength! Vengeance is mine thus said Blaster Dark Revenger. Cray is looking for leaders to lead them in the war against Link Joker and the Void. Only a few brave warriors accepted the challenge, and Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom agreed to lead the Shadow Paladins alongside his faithful friend Blaster Dark Revenger!

Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom is a good and well-balanced Break Ride card. Mordred Phantom's Break Ride skill is an even zero by Break Riding a grade 3 unit and regaining one card back from the Superior Call. He doesn't give an immense power increase to his allies like Solitary Liberator, Gancelot. The Break Ride is one of the easiest to defend against because it doesn't give the Shadow Paladin player a major plus and overpowers his or her field.

Furthermore, Mordred Phantom greatly help reduces the scarifies to activate the Shadow Paladin's powerful skills. The Shadow Paladins are known for sacrificing their allies for power so they need to send more troops to battle! Superior Call Skull Witch, Nemain to use her skill to draw two cards. Activate Phantom Blaster Dragon's skill by superior calling a unit from the deck after Break Riding Phantom Blaster Dragon.

In addition, Mordred Phantom has a good partnership with Blaster Dark's various forms. Use Mordred Phantom's Break Ride skill to superior call Blaster Dark Revenger to retire an opponent's unit. Be sure to Superior Call Blaster Dark Revenger in the same column with Barrier Troop Revenger, Dorint.  However, if you're not using a Revenger deck, then Blaster Dark Spirit is a great substitution for Blaster Dark Revenger, and Blaster Dark Spirit's skill is cheaper than Blaster Dark Revenger's skill's initial cost.

In closing, Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom is a well-balanced Break Ride unit. Bushiroad's design team should really consider making more balanced Break Ride units like Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom, instead of giving massive power creep skills to many Break Ride units. His Break Skill powers up the Vanguard and recruits an ally to the battlefield. Now! Illusionary Revenger, Mordred Phantom lead Cray's forces to battle and crush the Void!
